Tonight, two close friends have made the news for awesome reasons. Both of them do fantastic community work, and due to various reasons, the media have seen fit to advertise their good work. I personally hope this will lead to more people jumping on board and helping out, as both of them are pretty well doing it on their own.
One of the issues of being in the spotlight however, is that other people can react really badly to it. Rather than have an attitude of “yay, this person is doing a great thing, I wonder what I can do to help”, it seems their mindset is one of “gee, this person is getting attention and I really don’t like that for whatever reason (jealousy?), so I’m going to make their life hell”.
And make their life hell they do.
The specifics are not mine to divulge – my friends will do that on their own blogs/websites if/when they see fit. I will tell you that some of the things that have occurred however, have made my jaw drop.
I mean, why? What could possibly drive someone to focus their attention on somebody doing a good deed, and try to make them miserable? Is it jealousy that they are getting attention? It’s certainly not about money, as neither of these women are making any – indeed, they are paying out of their own pockets to do what they do. It can’t be jealousy of a good job or any of the perks that come with having a good job, as neither of these women work in the traditional “get paid a wage/salary” sense of the word. They’re too busy trying to make the world a better place for us all. Is it that they are doing good deeds? Are people that evil that they will pick on someone for doing something nice to help another human being? One of the bullies is also a volunteer (of sorts), so I’m thinking it’s not a hatred of good deeds.
So I’m back to thinking it’s jealousy of attention. And now that these women are getting some more of it, I really hope the bullies just stay the fuck away from them and leave them be. Get a hobby. Get a life. Get something to hold on to, so you can let go of the hatred. Seriously.
